A little good news, a little bad news

Hey guys, I just wanted to check in and give a quick update… I did not win my Diet Bet. I’m really sad about it, but it is what it is. Your actions have consequences, and clearly my weekend in Omaha was too much damage for me to overcome in one week. My friend won her bet and pocketed $40! That’s awesome!

I’m disappointed, but happy to be still losing weight. I have lots to share, but you’ll have to wait 2-3 weeks. I have a test today that I’m studying for as well as a book I need to read and write a report on by Thursday night. And I have to get ready for my next trip. This Friday I’ll be headed to Beijing and then Shanghai, China! I’m so excited and still have lots to do, so please excuse my short post.

My goal while in China is not to gain even one ounce! I gained 2-3 pounds in Omaha and I am focused on not doing the same this time around! I’ll weigh myself Thursday and keep it ready for comparison when I come back. And I also plan to do another Diet Bet some time after I get back from my trip, hopefully with better results this time!

Also I have to share all the healthy foods I have been cooking this past week as well as pictures from my hiking trip this past Saturday! I love incorporating exercise into hanging out with my friends!

Last tidbit before I go and tackle my to do list… I accomplished my goal of averaging 1.6 hours of exercise a day! And now

About a month ago, I got an email from a friend that asked if I was interested in participating in a dit bet. I looked it up and thought this really seemed right up my alley.

I love the tagline on the Dietbet app… “Lose weight with your friends while taking their money.”

The premise of this website is to encourage people to lose weight through betting their own money on their success. My particular game lasts for one month and you are required to lose 4%  of your body weight for a $25 bet. Y’all know I’m unemployed now so I NEED to win my money back!

I’m doing a “Kickstarter” which is 4% in 4 weeks. The other type of bet is the “Transformer” which is 10% in 6 months. If you enter and don’t meet your goal, you lose your money. But if you meet your goal, you win the pot minus the fee Dietbet charges. The fee that Dietbet charges for my particular game is about 10% percent of the total pot, but they guarantee you will at least get the amount you put in for a bet back. (They will adjust their fees so you won’t lose money if the payout ends up being less than what was paid to get in the game.)

People can create their own games or join one of the many open games that are started by Jillian Michaels, Chris Powell, bloggers and regular people. I thought it seemed pretty legit and was anxious to try and win some money.

My game has 707 players and a pot of $17,700, and the Dietbet fee is 1770, so that leaves a pot of $15930 to be divided amongst the winners. If 75% of people (531 people) then my take would be $30. Nothing to get excited about, but that’ll be $5 profit, which is about 20% return on my investment, not to mention the benefit of improved health that comes with dropping almost 11 pounds. So if only half of the people registered meet their goals then my share would be $50! Doubling my investment is definitely something to get excited about. So I’m going to have to hope that at least half of the people don’t meet their goal… I know that’s horrible of me isn’t it?

On March 5th I weighed in at 271.2 and in order to win the bet, had to weigh 260.2 by this Sunday. This morning I weighed in at 262.4, I think that’s a little too close for comfort. But I really let my weekend really derailed me and left me farther from my goal than I’d like. my trainer seems to believe that it’s possible, and I know my weight fluctuates almost daily so I just have to hope that when I weigh in the scale is being kind! 2.2 pounds in two days may sound far fetched, but I weighed 265.4 yesterday morning.

Are you nervous for me? I am. I thought oh I can lose 10.8 pounds in a month, no problem. But the problem comes with all of the fluctuations. FRUSTRATING! So hopefully on April 4th I’ll be having a “light day” or I lose so much weight that my little 1-3 pound fluctuations won’t even negatively affect my goal.

I’ll definitely let you know the results either way, I’m hoping for the best!

Clean eating

This week I practiced clean eating. If you’ve been here for awhile you know there have been many occasions when I’ve omitted processed foods from my diet on a short term basis as a way to try to shock my metabolism into cooperation. This week, I’m really proud to say I did stuck to the plan and had no processed foods and no meats from Sunday- Thursday. And I squeezed three great workouts in!

CONFESSION: I made some killer roasted cabbage and sprinkled bacon bits on them. Sorry. But the funny thing is the best part of the cabbage was actually the garlic and not the bacon bits. I could have just left them off and had a perfectly delicious dish.

Everything pictured above was less than $35. I did forget to get a couple potatoes, so I ran to Walmart and purchased some lentils (high protein beans), eggs, and two large potatoes. And that’s pretty much all I’ve been eating this week. If you’re super strict on clean eating you would probably want to go organic to minimize toxins in your food, but I hardly ever buy organic.

The good thing about doing this is it makes me focus on the wide variety of vegetable dishes that I enjoy and don’t prepare nearly enough of. Now I have a fridge full of veggies because all I really wanted to eat this week was broccoli.

I ended up dropping a couple pounds, but not as much as I expected. This morning I weighed in at 266.8. Last post I shared that I was sick and dropped down to 269.2 pounds. I stepped on the scale Tuesday and it was 270 and some change. My weight is going all over the place, but as long as the trend is overall downward, I’m happy. I know I’m putting in the work in the gym and making progress with my nutrition so I’m pretty stoked.

This weekend I will try my best not to overload my body with liquid calories and not overdo it as I plan to eat out several times this weekend. Changing your life simply starts with making better decisions than you did the day before. So have a drink or two for St. Patty’s Day, but let’s skip the dessert and appetizers. No matter how small, a step in the right direction is still called PROGRESS. Have an awesome weekend guys, because I definitely plan on doing so!

Hey there

Hey guys and gals,

I just wanted to check in and say that I haven’t forgotten about you all. I want to make a post at least weekly and I didn’t get to it last week, and maybe the week before that???

School is taking up so much more time than I ever expected, so I’m sorry this has been temporarily pushed to the background. But it is important to me to keep myself accountable and that is why I’m just checking in and saying hello.

Between getting ready for my midterms today and tomorrow, a vacation last week, and my dear friend coming in town later this week my mind has been all over the place. But after this week things should calm down for a while.

I am so excited to have my friend staying with me for a week. Not only because she’s an amazing friend and I LOVE playing hostess, but she has a very strict diet she follows and that is going to be great for me because I have been struggling with getting back into the swing of things. She doesn’t eat carbs or processed sugars. We both love to cook, so I’ll be sure to take pictures and detailed notes on what we make and share them with you all. She already said she has to make me a sugarless cheesecake, which I have to say doesn’t sound appetizing to me. But I said I’d try it and I’ll definitely let you know how it goes. I also have a pretty fun activity planned that I can’t wait to share with you guys.

So just be patient with me and I’ll have some good content to share with you all very soon!

Standing in the Present

Last week I showed a throwback picture of how 219 looked on me and said I missed that but I realized most of you don’t know what 270 looks like on me. So here I am all 270ish pounds of glory.

I’ve noticed that it was very difficult to find pictures of me at this size. I have plenty of pictures when I was smaller, but it turns out I shy away from cameras nowadays. It is hard for me to see myself in this unfamiliar body. But I managed to dig up a few pictures to share today.

I found this Saint Patty’s Day picture on Instagram and I wanted to share you guys my cute little costar. I wanted to take him home, but with a $1500 price tag I had to give him back to his owners. I intentionally cropped my bulging tummy out of this pic before I posted it to Instagram and I can’t find the original to share with you… Sorry. Well not so much!

Since I can not seem to find a body shot of me, here’s a quick mirror pic I snapped. Please excuse the poor quality, bad lighting and messy hair. I literally woke up and took a picture. One day I will get better at the quality of photos I share.

This person doesn’t look at all like the person in the throwback pictures. But you know what, she will. I’m working on it. This Monday’s weigh in was 270.6. That’s 3.6 pounds closer to a healthier me. It’s funny how the small bit of effort I’m making is working out so well. My next post I can get into some of the things I’ve been doing and not doing. This is progress, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

I would love to stay and chat longer, but every room in my house is a disaster zone. How does a person’s unused guest room look like a hurricane came through it??? NEGLECT. So today is all about the house and of course studying. I bet I can burn plenty of calories straightening up this mess. And the grass is just calling my name. I’ve realized that it doesn’t cut itself and cutting every other week just isn’t acceptable when most of my neighbors have a weekly lawn service. I’ve come to realize my definition of success will be obtained when I can afford to have a weekly lawn service, bimonthly housekeeper and a trainer. That’s when I know I’ve made it, but until then I’m making it. I’m the housekeeper, lawn guy, trainer, employee and student.

Many of you have to wear many hats as well, so let’s take it one task at a time and one day at a time. Have a good weekend everyone.

I had a first last month. I bought my first (and second) pair of size 20 pants. Aye yi yi. Jumping from 16 to 18 was traumatizing, but when I had only a few pair of pants that fit I knew it was time to buy a pair or two of pants that I could fasten properly. I also decided a size jump wasn’t worthy of a pricey or luxurious pair of pants so I went to Walmart and purchased a couple pair of trousers I could comfortably wear to work.

This could possibly be classified as oversharing but lately I could be caught wearing pants that won’t zip or button and are only held together by a belt that is hidden under an oversized blouse. I share this detail because I hope I am not the only person guilty of this. Having to spend the whole day double checking to make sure your little wardrobe secret stays hidden. At a time when even the best and most tailored outfits make you feel uncomfortable. Because the honest truth is you are not comfortable in your skin. Trying on clothes, looking in a mirror and NUDITY are all tasks that you avoid as much as possible. But unfortunately there’s that mirror in front of the shower that you inadvertently get a peek at almost every night. And that one short glance before you can divert your eyes away is enough to bring tears to your eyes and shame to your conscious.

The solution to this constant sea of wardrobe malfunctions is quite easy to identify, but at this time feels impossible to implement. Why is this task that I once lived for and wanted more than anything feeling like an impossible feat? The will to lose weight is not in a single inch of my body. Even with the constant embarassment of wearing ill fitting clothes and self judgement the will is just not there.

How can I motivate myself? How do you make yourself work for something that feels outside of your grasp?  Will posting an embarassing secrets light a fire to me? Or maybe stepping on the scale to face the numbers?

Let’s Make a Plan

I really enjoy cooking so meal planning is something I can definitely do. I hate blindly going to the grocery story and making $100 of purchases then going home and not knowing what to cook. That makes no sense! And then I end up wasting so much food. So meal planning is not only good for my waistline, but it will also benefit my wallet! I’m all for that.

My meal planner was under $10 and purchased from Target. It’s a simple dry erase board with spaces for lunch, dinner and notes each day. And it also came with a note pad for a grocery list. I really like it and I hope he and I will get to know each other much better!

This week’s meal plan consists of cooking four meals and making tuna for lunch a couple days.

Monday I made a beef stew/stroganoff type of thing. It had a base more like a stew but I can’t call it a stew because I didn’t put other vegetables in the recipe. I know I really should have. But I paired it with a nice sized salad.

I know you’re looking and this and thinking what’s healthy about this? Well…

It’s not real pasta, it’s tofu noodles! That’s a big fat, carb and calorie cut right there. Two servings of these noodles only contain 40 calories, 6 grams of carbs, 1 gram of fat and 30 mg of sodium. So much better than pasta! You can check out my post about Shirataki tofu noodles here. 

My salad including Creamy French dressing and a serving of olives was only 220 calories and my main dish was only 280 calories thanks to my pasta swap. That’s a hearty, filling and tasty meal for 500 calories! Now that’s a nice start to my week.

My other meals planned for this week include baked fish and veggies, pizza with a cauliflower crust and a homemade chili. I’m not sure what I’m most excited about… I’ve always wanted to make a homemade chili, but if I like this cauliflower pizza then that’s a great way to get my pizza fix without the carbs and calories of traditional pizza. I’m excited about this…. I’ll definitely let you all know how it goes.

You also may notice that I have juice at the top of my calendar. I ordered my juicer last year and really enjoyed it. It got packed up and brought to the new house and I haven’t pulled it out since. But that’s about to change! I want to have juice for breakfast at least twice a week and I will share my favorite recipes with you all.

If you stumbled yesterday, guess what? You were blessed with another day to get it right! Let’s all make today a good one and vow to give it our best shot.
